It is used to dock the Space Shuttle orbiter and to connect the Functional Cargo Block (Zarya) to Pressurized Mating Adapter-1. A system compatible with APAS is used by the Chinese Shenzhou spacecraft making it possible for that spacecraft to dock with the ISS.

has gloss	fra: Le système damarrage périphérique androgyne (en anglais APAS cest à dire Androgynous Peripheral Attach System ou Androgynous Peripheral Assembly System) est un système daccouplement entre vaisseaux spatiaux développé pour le programme Apollo-Soyouz et utilisé par la suite dans la station Mir et la station spatiale internationale . Il est mis en œuvre dune part par la navette spatiale américaine lorsque celle-ci saccouple à la station spatiale internationale, dautre part sur le module russe Zarya pour sa connexion avec la partie non russe de la station via le module daccouplement pressurisé (PMA) . Un système compatible avec lAPAS est mis en oeuvre sur les vaisseaux spatiaux chinois Shenzhou permettant à ceux-ci de s'amarrer à la station spatiale américaine.
