Besonderer Fokus lag dabei auf Sprachen der Afroamerikaner Nordamerikas sowie der Westafrikanischen Länder, wobei bei ersterer insbesondere die Afrikanischen Wurzeln betont wurden. Seit 1996 wird es häufig und fälschlicherweise als Synonym zu Afroamerikanischem Englisch verwendet.
