The organization is currently the largest online hacking community in the world, with a userbase of well over 1,300,000. The actual number of active members is believed to be much lower, as most accounts are never used, or are only used shortly after creation. An average of 50 members are logged on per day, and the most was 557 users online at the same time. It aims to provide users with a way to learn and practice basic and advanced "hacking" skills through a series of challenges, in a safe and legal environment. Per its size, many HTS users have begun their own HTS-based local hacker groups.
