Their purpose is to promote and extend environmental awareness, by presenting biodiversity as the basis for environmental conservation and ecologically sustainable development. This is achieved through developing school based curricula that engage students interactively with their surrounding environment. Ideally, learnscapes incorporate educational, environmental and social outcomes that reflect the character of the community as well as the school site.

has gloss	deu: Wildnispädagogik (oder Wildnisbildung) beruht auf Bildungserfahrungen durch die Begegnung mit der Wildnis. Die Begriffe sind seit etwa fünfzehn Jahren in der Umweltbildung gebräuchlich. Beide Ausdrücke sind widersprüchlich, denn es handelt sich nicht um Pädagogik, beziehungsweise Bildung im herkömmlichen Sinne: „Wildnispädagogik scheint geradezu auf den Kopf zu stellen, worum es in der Pädagogik schon immer ging: die Befreiung des Menschen vom Urzustand, das Herausführen (lat. educare) aus dem Zustand der Unmündigkeit. Pädagogik bemühte sich in aller Regel nicht um eine Erziehung, die für das Leben in der fernen Wildnis lebenstauglich macht."
