Beli, ki ima prvo potezo mora prisiliti črnega da ga (belega) matira v predpisanem številu potez; to pravilo opisuje samomat. Dodatni pogoj pa je, da morata obe strani dati mat, če ga lahko. Če velja to pravilo le za črnega, se problem imenuje semi-refleksni mat.
