SportsML wurde von der 1965 gegründeten International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC) entwickelt. Eine XML-Instanz von SportsML kann entweder alleinstehend übermittelt werden, oder sie kann einen Teil eines NewsML-Paketes darstellen.
